The stranger appeared to be about seven feet tall because he had to duck his head to walk through every doorway. I am sure that a lot of people have seen professional basketball players that were the same height as that guy, I know I have! They are tall and usually very skinny.
This guy was anything but skinny. He wasn’t fat either, he was all muscle. When I say he was muscular think super heavyweight bodybuilder with about four to six percent fat.
On the other hand I didn’t have any fat on my body either. You could say that I was compact and wiry. I was, in fact, a full two feet shorter than him and probably weighed just a third of his weight.
Well anyway, I spotted him going into the locker room and knew I didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of getting to know him. I just continued my routine and put all thoughts of being with him out of my mind. (Damn, how I tried to do that!)
I knew that guys like me were invisible to guys like him even though the gym was almost empty, however I couldn’t help but glance his way now and then.
I slowed down and convinced myself that I was in a cool down mode. Soon most of the members left. One or two were on treadmills but in time those treadmills also fell silent. I was at the end of extending, that is, finding reasons to stay on the gym floor when he came up to me.
“Are you a new member,” he asked.
“Not yet,” I said with nonchalance.
“Thinking of joining?” he pursued. I just shrugged.
“Would you sit down so we can talk face to face?” I asked. He laughed with gusto for a full minute. I didn’t think it was funny.
“Hey Paul, can you lock up. The locker room is empty and the office is locked.” A voice from the lobby asked.
